Wolf Lepenies

Sociologist by training and historian by inclination. Wolf Lepenies is a professor emeritus and permanent member at the Wissenschaftskolleg zu Berlin (Institute for Advanced Study) where he has served as its Rektor from 1986 through 2001. Under his direction, the Wissenschaftskolleg became instrumental in setting up Institutes of Advanced Study in Central and Eastern Europe, starting with the Collegium Budapest in 1990. Lepenies has published widely, concentrating on problems of intellectual history and the history of natural as well as social disciplines.
